Let's Go
For those of us born in the Caribbean who migrated to Canada at a young age, going "back home" for a vacation is a welcome thought. I remember our first family trip back home when I was ten years old. Returning to my grandmother's house on the hill ,and visiting family and friends was a thrill. We spent time as tourists, visiting all the sights and landmarks that I never had a chance to experience as a child, and it was wonderful.
But, aside from vacationing in our Island of birth, how many of us have ventured out and visited another Island in the Caribbean besides our own? I have heard amazing things about Cuba and how beautiful the beaches and people are, not to mention those nostalgic cars on the road and detailed architecture that brings you back to a simpler time in history. Some friends have gone to Carnival in Trinidad and came back bragging about the best Carnival experience they have ever had. Then there's Barbados and their beaches, Haiti and it's rich history, Guyana and their diversity, Dominica and Martinique and their vibrant arts scene, Jamaica and their music and natural beauty.
I've realized that the Caribbean is one of those regions that is loved around the world, and I need to know more, experience more and learn more about this region that is so much a part of who I am. I may not be able to Island hop from St. Lucia to St. Croix, but I can get a glimpse of the people and culture through the CCM website and country profiles. Come along with me and mek we Island hop. Feel the breeze, smell the food, dip your feet in the warm water, greet the beautiful faces of the people, and embrace the arts and culture of the best region in the world - Let's go to the Caribbean.
